Portishead Town Ladies travelled to Cheltenham Town to play their Development side and came away with all three points. The reverse game earlier in the season had resulted in a narrow 3-2 win for Posset however this match saw them improve to a 10-0 win with 5 goals in each half. The pitch was sticky making flowing, entertaining football difficult to achieve.
Taylor Gainey, making her debut after transferring from Keynsham opened the scoring with an intelligent lob over the Cheltenham goalkeeper in the third minute and although Portishead had much of the play it was not until the 26th minute that Gainey increased the lead with a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area. Two minutes later Gainey broke down the wing and crossed for Shannon Holloway to tap in from close range. In the 35th minute Hannah Thornton and Gainey combined for Gainey to smash the ball over the keeper before Jessica Smailes and Natallie Zajaczkowski played a one two for Smailes to plant the ball in the corner of the goal for her first strike of the season.
Cheltenham came out strongly in the second half and for a period played their best football of the match however could not convert any chances into goals with Portishead keeper Chloe Fensome looking secure. Portishead saw some good play from Eleanor Howard in midfield, also making her debut, and in the 62nd minute she fed Gainey on the right who crossed for Thornton to make it six, she added another a few minutes later when her shot crept under the Cheltenham keeper. Thornton completed her 15 minute hatrick with fierce long shot from outside the penalty area. In the last few minutes Gainey scored a further two goals to take her match tally to five.
With many other matches called off due to the weather, this win has resulted in Portishead going into the New Year top of South West Women's League (East) and the Reserve team top of Somerset Women's Division 2
