Ladies Make The Final
Portishead Town Ladies Reach The League Cup Final
Portishead hammered home 5 against Wembdon to secure themselves a place in the league cup final. Wembdon, starting the game a (wo)man down, parked the bus, putting in some strong defensive marking to keep the home side out. Numerous Portishead chances were frustrated by the Wembdon keeper, whose safe hands put paid to several of the home side’s hopeful in-swinging crosses.
A frustrated Portishead side increased the velocity of their attack with some pacey charges down the flanks, and struck gold when Shannon Holloway broke through the Wembdon back line with a flying run at the keeper, before thumping the ball into the back of the away side’s net.
Scenting blood, Portishead pushed on against the visitors, with both teams holding their own in the centre of the field until Ruby Lowe’s swift feet gave her space to make it 2 with a left-footed screamer into the bottom corner.
The second half saw Wembdon’s return to full strength will eleven players, but Portishead gave them no breathing space from the whistle, and an exquisitely-weighted looping corner from Hannah Thornton found Lowe, who headed it firmly past the keeper.
Portishead maintained the bombardment of the Wembdon goal, with some dangerous crosses from Jess Smailes keeping the away side’s defence busy, and some mazy dribbling from Thornton allowing Portishead several breaks that were shut down by the Wembdon’s keeper.
The home side found joy in the eighty-fifth minute, with Lowe mimicking her earlier goal with another textbook-perfect header from a Thornton corner to grab herself a hattrick. But Portishead weren’t finished, and a final rapid run from Holloway left the Wembdon fullbacks for dead, as she chipped the keeper and made it five before the final whistle.
Player of the match was Ruby Lowe for her inhuman stamina, scoring a hattrick after finishing a 10k race that morning. Portishead face off against Pen Mill in the cup final next Sunday, 14th May.
