Valiant Portishead’s 10 men suffer 6-2 defeat at Whitchurch

Injuries and half-term hit hard
A sunny February morning set the scene for this Avon Youth League U13 clash in which a weakened Portishead team could field only 10 players.
Whitchurch dominated from the start, scoring twice through Olli SULLEY in the first 20 minutes. Against run of play, Portishead then won a throw-in deep in the Whitchurch half, from which Sammy FOSTER finished coolly in the bottom corner.
Whitchurch continued pressing, Ethan Noble in the Portishead goal making a string of saves to keep Portishead in the game. Portishead remained dangerous on the break , and a slick move on the left saw Kevin RABE’s shot rebound off the goalkeeper, to be swept in by Alex ESPOSITO. As the host’s man advantage continued to tell, SULLEY got his hattrick to make it 3-2 Whitchurch at half time.
Portishead started the second half strongly and FOSTER was unlucky to see his free kick clear the crossbar. Whitchurch’s Billy PHILIPS then scored with a fine header.
Whitchurch continued to press against a tiring Portishead, with SULLEY scoring another two and being denied more by NOBLE. Portishead battled to the end, with James Tait hitting the post, but they couldn’t find a way back into the game.
