Mid-season break is over
A mid-season break of sorts with no games for 4 or 5 weeks meant that the team should be well rested, but maybe a little rusty as we returned to league action. We welcomed Brislington Juniors Colts looking to correct our performance earlier in the season when we threw away a 2 goal lead late on to draw 3-3. We were missing 2 squad members, but looked strong enough on paper to be confident of our chances. Toby was in goal with a back four of Flynn, Harry, Max and Emmanuel. Kyran anchored midfield behind Liam and Olly with a front three of Joel, Cody and Mike with Dex taking the substitute role.
Weeks of rain had taken their toll on the pitch which was pretty poor with at least one large muddy puddle in the centre of the park and the grass was very long. We also spent the first half kicking into the wind and it was only in the first minute that a ball hung in the air and the opposition hit a long speculative effort that caught the wind and dropped in over Toby’s head to put is behind surprisingly. However we responded properly and started playing football passing the ball in neat triangles and carving out some chances. There were a few long range efforts from Kyran, Liam, Olly and Harry at various stages. We had players with time on the ball such as Harry, Kyran and Flynn and they were using the ball well. Eventually as the half wore on we created the chance to get even as Joel played the ball into Mike in the centre and, rather than turn and shoot, he received a call from Liam to the side and a neat square ball allowed Liam time and space to pick his corner and bring the scores level. We had the lion’s share of possession, but did not stretch the opponents enough and we came in at half time with the scores at 1-1.
Dex came on for Joel, but at right back with Flynn into midfield and Liam into the front three. The pattern of the first half continued as we remained the stronger team with lots more possession. Toby was alert when needed and was quick off his line as and when needed. Emmanuel had the Brislington striker tied up and Max was strong alongside him. Harry and Dex were both getting forward more in support of our efforts going forward. Kyran was looking for passes for what was effectively our front 5 as we continued to knock on the door. Joel came back on for Olly as we continued to search for the breakthrough. Eventually an attack down the right saw Kyran get the ball to Mike out wide and he looked to whip a cross in. Fortunately for us the wind played its part in our favour this time and his cross landed into the corner beyond their reach of their keeper. A third followed quickly with a neat one two on the edge of the area between Cody and Joel ended with the latter scoring our third. We still had time for a free kick on the edge of the area after Flynn was brought down. Kyran beat the wall, but was unable to beat the keeper and the game finished 3-1 to seal our seventh consecutive league victory.
Man of the Match: Harry Selwyn – a strong performance in defence combined with good intelligent use of the ball with the time and space he had. A good all-round performance.
