Three More Points Secured
Tough Conditions Again, Another Three Points
A home tie this week vs Brislington Juniors and whilst the conditions were marginally better than last week, our pitch at Gordano was in relatively poor condition meaning the onlooking Bristol City scout was unlikely to see much great football. We had 13 players this week, so the relative luxury of naming the returning Josh and Dex on the bench. Toby was in goal behind Flynn, Harry, Max and Emmanuel. Kyran anchored the midfield behind Olly and Liam and our front three of Joel, Cody and Mike.
The first few minutes were a little disjointed as we sought to adapt to the ground. However once we started passing then we started creating chances and we had plenty throughout the game. Cody, Joel and Mike all had varying degrees of chances, but found a combination of awkward bobbles, good goalkeeping or poor decision making cost us the chance to take a lead. We had a number of offside calls against the team as Olly, Liam and Kyran provided chances to our front line. In or own half the defence were working very well. Toby was under little pressure and Flynn and Max both provided effective screens. Emmanuel was excelling in man marking Brislington’s danger player nullifying his impact in the match. Harry has been settling in well to the left back role over the last two weeks and he has been getting forward well. As the half was coming to a close it was Harry who was far forward and as he swung in his cross, it drifted toward the goal and in the end nestled in the corner beyond the stranded Brislington goalkeeper to give us a 1-0 lead at half time.
We brought Dex on for Flynn and Josh on for Max with Harry moving to centre back to start the second half and instructed the team to ensure that they denied Brislington any opportunities and in that respect the second half went well. Even better we continued to create chances, but again the chances went begging. Conditions were clearly a factor and the pitch was hard, but we needed to be more clinical. Some really strong defensive work from Josh saw him snuff out an attack and then set Mike free one on one with the keeper. His shot was slid past the keeper but appeared to be held up on its way to the line. Fortunately, Cody was following in and he beat the Brislington defender to the ball and bundled it in to double our advantage. Flynn came on for Olly in midfield and Max came on for Mike as we looked to close the game out. One momentary lapse saw an attack not being closed down quickly enough and an excellent shot from the Brislington player arced from the edge of the box beyond Toby and all of a sudden it looked closer than the game ever should have been. However we kept our concentration and a breakaway between Cody, Liam and Joel saw two or three attempts blocked before the ball was stood up for Joel to head home at the far post and seal a 3-1 win.
Overall a game we controlled for large parts and, if we had been more clinical in our finishing, one we could have won by a greater margin. Still a good three points on the board again.
Man of the Match: Kyran Garrett – he has played a vital role in anchoring the midfield and screening the defence. Always strong in the challenge and using the ball well.
