Tough Defeat to League Leaders
Unlucky Defeat But Brave Effort
The recent weeks have been a little stop start with some match postponements, but we were up again against league leaders, Yate United, who were no doubt keen to exact some measure of revenge for victory over them earlier in the season, which remains their only defeat.
We were without a few players for the game, so wit a bare 11 we had to improvise a little. Harry is still filling in for Toby in goal and he was behind a back three of Emmanuel, Max and Liam. We had Dex and Joel as wing backs with Kyran, Olly and Elijah in centre midfield. Cody and Mike sat up front. Unfortunately the formation did not get the best out of our team and we were 2-0. Our one moment of quality was a stunning end to end passing move with Liam stepping out and neatly finishing, but the linesman's flag was raised and so the goal did not stand.
We had a team talk at half time and the team suggested we needed ore in midfield so we moved around back to our usual 4-3-3 and Joel and Dex took the full back roles, with Liam moving into midfield with Olly, Kyran and Elijah. The second half was definitely a case of what could have been. Throughout the second half we were much more the dominant team. We hit the woodwork twice, we had two or three shots fizz past the post as we peppered the Yate goal. Unbelievably they scored a breakaway with their one meaningful attack and we were 3-0 down facing defeat. The team did not give up though and bravely fought back. Firstly Elijah set Mike free to score one and then Cody grabbed another as we got back to within a goal with minutes remaining. As it was Yate were grateful to hand on and escape with the victory.
A case of what might have been - on another day we could have had 5 or 6 in the second half and if our tactics were right in the first half then who knows. More to learn for management and team alike and plenty to keep optimistic about for the rest of the season.
Man of the Match: Joel James - a strong performance on the left hand side, playing more defensively than he would like, but he still contributed going forward and back.
