Spirited Performance and Victory
Team shows fight and determination to get three points
Like us, Chilcompton are new to the league having been advanced up from last season’s Division 4 and we were expecting a tough game, especially when we saw the size of our opponents. We were without Elijah and Toby, so Harry was once again deputising in goal. Our back four of Dex, Flynn, Max and Emmanuel with a midfield trio of Liam, Kyran and Olly. Joel started wide left, Cody wide right and Mike was down the middle with Josh taking the space on the bench.
A tough game from the start saw Chilcompton impose their game on us somewhat and for a while we did look a little intimidated. Around half way through the first half a speculative effort from Chilcompton squeezed into the corner and we looked like we were in for a hard afternoon. However what happened next was pleasing to see. A midfield surge and 1-2 between Liam and Joel saw Liam score, but the effort was rules out for offside. But our goal soon followed when some neat interplay with Liam, Olly and Mike saw Mike’s strong effort parried to the right hand side where Cody was following in to convert on the volley to make it all square. Better followed as Cody, clearly buoyed by his goal, chased down a Chilcompton defender and robbed him of the ball. His powerful shot was heading in from the minute he struck it outside of the area and in no time at all we had turned it around into a 2-1 lead. The rest of the half played out evenly, but Chilcompton grabbed one just before the whistle to take the game in all square at 2-2.
At half time Josh came on for Dex whose foot was hurting, but we otherwise kept the same formation. The second half was just as tough as both teams fought to get the advantage. Unfortunately for us Chilcompton struck the first blow of the second half and took a 3-2 lead and then Liam was injured, so Dex had to come back on as he was less injured.
A seemingly innocuous free kick in the centre of the pitch gave us a chance to advance deep into the Chilcompton half. Kyran stepped up to deliver this and his floated ball looked like it was going to reach Dex’s head, but it went over him and past everybody, deceiving the keeper and landing in the corner to bring us level again for the second time in the match. There were ten minutes left and our tails were up. Our front three were combining well and a slick move down the right-hand side saw Joel play quick 1-2 with Cody and get to the by-line before pulling the ball back across the goal where Mike was arriving perfectly to steer the ball home and sending us 4-3 up and that was where the game finished. A great dogged performance from the team showing skill and composure where needed.
Man of the Match: Cody Wood – Dangerous and productive throughout with 2 goals and a vital role in our winner.
