Great Victory for the Team
Dominant performance from the team
The team made their official home debut at Portishead Town's ground this week with our game against Mangotsfield being held at the delightfully named Chemical Pitch. The pitch looked great and so we were optimistic that it would support a good slick passing game.
We had a few absences this week with Toby injured and half term accounting for Olly and Cody, but Mike was back from injury and Luca was available for selection too, so we started with our traditional formation. Harry deputising in goal, a back four of Dex, Max, Emmanuel and Josh. Flynn moved forward this week to anchor midfield behind Liam and Kyran. Elijah pushed out left this week, Joel over to the right and Mike back in the centre - Luca took his place on the subs bench.
The team look composed from the outset and we set about working with the ball and making the pitch wide and long. Neat triangles in the midfield saw us starting to care out chances and getting our front three in possession in dangerous areas. One early chance saw two of our players race free and as Joel unselfishly squared for Liam to score, the referee called the game back for an offside. This was only a temporary reprieve as the same combination clicked again and this time Liam slotted home to open the scoring. Another chance saw the ball squared back by Liam just a little behind Elijah who could not adjust his shape in time to convert. Mike looked dangerous in the opening exchanges, but took an early knock and was complaining on a dead leg. As we prepared to take him off, Kyran got on the ball and sipped Liam through once again. Another composed finish doubled our lead before we made the change - Luca on into the defence, Josh moving forward into midfield and Liam pushed into the front three. The change did not disrupt us as shortly afterwards an attack saw Kyran brought down in the penalty area and the ref blew for the penalty.
Although Kyran picked up the ball the manager stuck to his footballing logic and suggested that the player on the hat-trick should take the penalty. Unfortunately the Mango keeper saved well and the manager was left needing to apologise to Kyran. Fortunately that did not become the story of the day as another slick attack from the team saw Elijah sent clear before he laid on the chance for Joel who calmly finished to send us in at half time 3-0 up.
We made a few adjustments at half time but reminded the team that the most important thing to remember was not to concede or provide the opposition with any opportunity to get back into the game. The defence had already performed well shutting down any opportunities, Dex, Luca and Josh had been solid in defence and Emmanuel was showing good discipline in leading the defensive unit. Harry was performing well in goal, his kicking was composed and he was alive to any danger to sniff out any opportunities for the opposition. Max was especially strong in defence and made a number of notable well timed challenges.
Moving forward we remained dangerous and an early corner from Kyran was delivered into the danger area. It dropped to the feet of Elijah 10 yards out and he finished to make it 4-0. Another chance saw Liam through clean again, but rather than shoot he unselfishly squared but unfortunately the ball hit Joel's hand. However Liam soon had his hat trick as Elijah sent him clear and another confident finish made it 5-0. We all started to move forward now and soon it was a well placed cross from Dex that caused Mango problems and one of their defenders stretching unluckily diverted the ball past his own keeper.
More chances followed in quick succession. Liam laid on another chance for Joel and he skilfully lifted the ball over the Mango keeper to make it 7-0. The corners racked up and Luca was forward looking for a goal, but the ball would not drop for him. On another corner the ball dropped to Flynn, who squared to Elijah and he got another making it 8-0. Flynn had been excellent in his new midfield role too always looking comfortable on the ball. Towards the end Elijah moved back and we gave Josh the chance to move forward far on the right. Our game was a little disjointed as the defence moved up too, but Harry was on hand to make some good saves towards the end to keep his clean sheet. A final gloss was added when Joel got his hat trick after being put through one more time by Kyran and we ran out with a great 9-0 victory.
A great performance by the boys who truly played to their strengths, worked as a team and were determined in their pursuit of goals.
Man of the Match: Max Bracey - a really strong display at the back which formed the basis of the game allowing us to push forward so much.
