Improved Performance, Unlucky to Lose
We were a little better prepared this week with 2 subs to call on after last week's team scraped together with just 11 players. We were able to name a more familiar starting line up this week with Toby in goal and a back four of Flynn, Max, Emmanuel and Harry. Liam anchored midfield behind Joel and Kyran with Elijah and Cody up front either side of Mike. Josh and Olly took their spaces on the bench.
Longwell Green were a big looking powerful team and they had a big victory the previous week, so were sat at the top of the table. However from the get go it was clear at that we were a match for them. Unfortunately our luck appeared to be out as we lost Mike to injury early. Olly was sent on as we switched to a diamond. Then Longwell Green scored an absolute screamer of an opener from their only attack of the half. However for the remainder of the half we were clearly playing the better football. Harry and Emmanuel had little to do with our midfield of Liam, Kyran, Joel and Olly making all of the play. Flynn was especially effective in joining up our play and moving us forward. Our pressure told as a corner on the right hand side was rifted over perfectly by Liam onto Elijah's head. He made good contact and the ball was in the goal to bring us level. This clearly inspired us and we pressed on. A powerful drive by Emmanuel through the heart of Longwell Green caused huge confusion and Elijah's scooped pass found Joel free. His connection was far from perfect, but their keeper struggled to keep it out and we had our second to go 2-1 up. We looked to add more before half time, but could not manage this coming in at 2-1 up.
Josh came on to replace Max at half time as we looked to build on our good work. However after the break our work was a little disjointed for the first 20 minutes. Where our passing before was crisp and precise. we were looking rushed and hurried. Unfortunately in this phase Longwell Green took advantage. They drew level from some slack marking at a corner and then followed quickly with a rebound from a free kick. Once we went 3-2 down we came fighting back, but the ball was not breaking for us and the game played out to a 3-2 defeat.
This was a hard one to take as there were many positives in the style of football that we played and the control we had at times, but ultimately we needed to convert that into more goals.
Man of the Match: Joel James - a busy action packed performance in the middle of the park and part of the midfield that ran the game.
