Table Top Clash
By Daniel Halstead
Team Denied Victory
A table topping (in theory once games in hand are counted) between ourselves and Boco. The team knew that a win would put their own destiny in their hands, but anything less would give Boco the upper hand.
We welcomed Liam back from his shoulder dislocation and this mean we had the luxury of three substitutes for the first time this season. Liam took a place on the bench with Olly and Josh whilst we played our usual formation. Toby in goal with a back four of Dex, Max, Mike and Harry. New recruit Joe anchored the midfield behind James and Kyran with our regular front three of Cody, Harvey and Joel.
Both teams played well from the outset with the chemical pitch making it easier to play good football (even if we keep having to retrieve the ball from the stream over the fence!) and as the game wore on, we started to carve out the better chances. Joe was having a positive impact in the midfield bringing a more physical presence for us. In fact he created the opening goal for us with a well timed slide rule pass through for Harvey to burst beyond his markers and drill the ball home in customary fashion. We pressed for more, but before half time were caught out by a sucker punch of a long ball down the middle that we did not deal with well enough and the Boco player converted to bring the scores level at half time.
We brought on Josh and Olly for Dex and Max and we started the second half well and looked the more likely team to score. Harvey looked to have won a penalty mid-way through the half, but the offside flag was raised during he build up and so we were denied. Liam made his return coming on mid-way through the second half to replace Joel on the left and he quickly found his touch and settled in like there had been no absence. The game was seemingly heading for a draw despite our best efforts to win when with two minutes to go we appeared to have got the winner with Harvey turning the ball past the Boco keeper, but we were frustrated to see the linesman's flag raised again and the goal scratched off. The game ended 1-1 despite our best efforts.
Man of the Match: Joe Harvey - added presence and composure in the screening role in midfield. A valuable addition to the team on this form.
