Three More Points
By Daniel Halstead
A long way to travel, but three points at the end of it all
Our longest away trip of the season, but it was pleasant once we reached Chilcompton - until the wind started up (for the 3rd or 4th week in a row!).
We had a couple missing, but a pretty strong looking line up despite that. Elijah was back from injury and took up a place at right back in defence with the regulars, Mike, Harry and Max ahead of Toby in goal. Our regular front six of Joe, James, Kyran, Joel, Cody and Harvey made up the team with Olly and Liam on the bench.
We played into the wind in the first half so it was hard work. However like the week before we excelled with the defence standing firm and refusing to let anything past them (especially the wind assisted corners) and Toby demonstrated the value to the team of a good keeper with some good saves to keep Chilcompton out. We started to adapt to the wind as the half wore on and before it was through we had grabbed a goal to make it even better. As we moved up the pitch through the midfield James found space on the edge of the area. As he looked like he was fouled he still got the ball out to the right. As everyone else stopped Harvey shifted the ball from his feet and smashed home the opener to take us in 1-0 at half time.
Liam and Olly came on for Max and James at half time as we looked to benefit ourselves from the wind. In truth our second half was not our finest work, but we did enough to control the game. The defence looked so solid with Liam and Elijah finding time to pick passes from the back and nothing passing Mike or Harry. We needed a goal to put the game beyond doubt and it arrived from a set piece. Cody floated a delicious corner across the area where Harry met it. However he did not head it as he normally would be expected to, instead he thumped home a stunning volley to double our lead and seemingly wrap the game up.
Joe came off for James as we looked to see out the remainder, but Chilcompton managed to get a goal to make it more nervous when we did not clear up a corner as effectively as we should have done. The team pressed forward again though and the points were secured when Joel took a corner on the right hand side. His left foot wrapped around the ball and using the wind he scored direct from the corner to seal three more points for the team. A pleasing afternoon's work in the end and a pleasant journey home for all.
Man of the Match: Mike Pouncey - Barely put a foot wrong all game and made sure that Chilcompton never got a foothold in the game.
